My Julia Childs’ Story

I recently had the pleasure of taking a cooking class called “Bon Appetit: Following in Julia’s Footsteps.” It was a great learning experience taught by Dustin Rennells who is best known for his “cupcakes and cocktails” class. (Doesn’t that sound totally fun?!)

While bruschetta is decidedly Italian, it was one of Julia Child’s favorite dishes and she prepared it often. Dustin has kindly given me permission to reprint this bruschetta recipe, and only asks that I say it was inspired by Julia. I changed the portion sizes, but otherwise it’s true to the original.

Years ago when I worked in Harvard Square, I lived just over the Cambridge line in Somerville. There was a fantastic, high-end grocery store about a block from my house called Savenor’s (it’s now on Beacon Hill in Boston). Julia also lived in the neighborhood and I would often see her  in the shop talking with the butchers and swapping recipe ideas. Of course every time I saw her, I’d lurk in a nearby aisle hoping to pick up a tip or two.

Her voice in person was quite remarkable and carried through the whole store. She was very tall, nearly 6 feet, and she always commanded a presence.  I think the best thing I learned from her was to always prepare fresh. And really, how can you go wrong with that?
